In brief: Terrible bad!!!!!!!!
One reliable sympton of a broken bone is horrible pain.
The broken bone just does not want to be moved at all. A bad strain could also give just as much pain, so that is why your physician often needs an x-ray to help sort things out. Some fractures such as an impacted fracture of the upper arm or a skull fracture may not be that painful, so we do not just go by pain. Go for an exam by your md.
