An early Stress Fracture of the foot may have just pain and no obvious changes and may even be missed on X-ray. At the other extreme would be traumatic fracture that will have throbbing pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, deformity, difficulty in weight bearing. In a compound fracture you may see bone sticking out. See the two site below for more info. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/stress-fractures/DS00556 http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/broken-ankle/DS00951

In brief: Foot Fracture
If there is a fractured bone involved, there will be swelling, warmth, and redness.
..Associated with pain and loss of function. Xrays will help to diagnose and confirm. See your pcp or podiatrist asap. Happy feet. -dr.H-.

In brief: Depends on site
Some fractures don't look like much when examining the patient and are diagnosed with x-ray or advanced imaging.
Others, can result in a foot or ankle that is highly deformed and obviously fractured.
