Sufferers may experience one or many of these symptoms. When severe, depression may lead to hopelessness, despair, and a desire to harm oneself or others. It may also be part of bipolar d/o -- and is treatable.

In brief: Funk

Its like when getting off the couch to go pee is like crossing the sahara desert then feeling guilty about it, wondering whats wrong with yourself constantly and being seperated from the world.
There is usually poor sleep yet sleepy all the time, wt changes, crying spells ( or not). Get help, it's so easy to treat.

In brief: Brain and/or psyche?

Others have given clear descritpions of depression.
I will add this: almost all the signs and symptoms of depression can occur as part of normal sadness or grief. But "clinical" depression appears to involve brain changes that have mad these moods deeper and more persistent and less reversible than normal. Depression may be triggered by an event--but it may also arise spontaneously.
