In brief: Pain

Also, fever, chills, redness and swelling.
Sometimes a tract will form in the skin called a sinus and will drain.

In brief: Several

An increased white blood cell count on cbc, redness, swelling and pain to the skin overlying the area.
Sometimes as with feet a non healing ulcer. The ulcer can show a overgrowth of angiogenic tissue or paronychia with tissue protruding from the ulcer. Nausea, vomiting, fever and chills if the infection is worsening and cellulitis which looks like a warm red streak eminating from the area.
