In brief: Knee pain

Could be multiple causes.
If from knee itself orthopedic surgeon or physiatrist should be able to help explain the cause.

In brief: Something new?

If this new and onset is rather fast, she possibly has gout--which is very painful.
It is a result of uric acid (dna material from cell brakdown (purines), clumping together forming tiny crystals) particles depositing in joint causing rapid/severe inflammation and thus pain. If trauma recently, possible bursitis, or infection. She can use motrin/aleve for pain, but should consult doc. Good luck.
