How soon after a torn meniscus will you be back to normal?

In brief: 2-4 weeks

Most of my patients are significantly better 2-4 weeks after meniscus surgery.
This is variable, though, depending on what the remainder of the patient's knee looks like. If there is arthritis in the knee, the results are not as good. If the knee is otherwise in good shape, patients generally are feeling pretty darn good within a month.

In brief: Removal vs repair

W/ a menisectomy most patients recover quickly, but in a meniscus repair the recovery needs to be slower so the repair can be protected.
Either way, it's pretty quick compared to many surgeries. When meniscal repair is possible this should be discussed since it will spare meniscus, & provide better protection of the knee in the long run (meniscus = < arthritis). Discuss these options w/ your md.
