In brief: Night time numbness

Carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) is caused when the median nerve is compressed at the wrist.
Cts may present as numbness, tingling and/or pain in the thumb, index, long and ring fingers. The symptoms my start at night only and progress to all of the time. Eventually hand weakness and loss of sensation may occur.

The associated pain often occurs in the middle of the night awakening you from sleep.

In brief: Usually tingling

Carpal tunnel surgery is a compression of the median nerve at the wrist so symptoms involve that nerve and specifically sensory symptoms such as generalized discomfort of the hand, numbness and tingling on the thumb side of the hand as well as motor changes and specifically weakness of the hand especially involving the thumb.
Other conditions such as tendonitis and arthritis may be associated.

In brief: Numbness

Most people first notice numbness in their hands.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is basically a pinched nerve in your wrist. As the nerve is deprived of blood, oxygen and nutrients it functions abnormally. As it progresses numbness turns to pain and the motor component of the nerve is affected causing weakness.
