In brief: See below
There are many potential causes of lumbago or low back pain.
The most common causes are related to strain or injury to the mucles and/or structures of the lower spine. While a "cure" often depends on the actual cause, prevention can be obtained by maintaining a healthy weight, good flexibility, and a strong core. See your physician if you have pain greater than 2 weeks.

The physicians who specialize in Back Pain include Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (non-surgeon) Orthopedic Spine (surgeon) Chiropractor (non-physician) providers. Osteopathic physicians, often in Family Medicine, have additional training in manipulation of the spine and musculoskeletal care. The techniques may seem important, but a listening and examining physician is priceless.

In brief: Assemble your team
Back pain can be due to many different problems.
See your regular doctor for a physical examination, diagnosis, and initial treatment plan. Have a radiologist review x-rays and mri. Consult physical therapist for exercise program, if ok with the general doctor, and consider a consultation with a pain specialist for chronic pain management with conservative management fails.

Pain specialists also treat acute pain, not just chronic. Consult action with a physiatrist may be helpful

In brief: Options
Back Pain can be managed effectively and can be relieved in a vast majority of people, but it will always require diligence on your part for nsaids, exercise, stretching and weight control/loss.
For those still having issues it may require treatments (injections, surgery, etc) to maintain relief as well.
