In brief: Neuroleptics

Often the best first line meds are neuroleptic medications such as Neurontin and lyrica (pregabalin).
Cymbalta is also a good choice. This will focus more on nerve symptoms. If you are dealing the spasm and spasticity then a muscle relaxant may help. Opioids may also help but should not be used as the first line medication. Physical therapy is the best non-medication alternative.

In brief: Several choices

Since dealing with "nerve pain", would choose neurontin, Gralise, Horizant, or Lyrica.
Might instead consider Cymbalta or Savella (milnacipran). Would prefer to avoid opioids in most cases.
