What is kidney transplantation surgery like for the recipient of the kidney?

In brief: Well tolerated
Since the placement of the transplanted kidney is superficial in the above the groin area in the lower abdomen, the surgery is easier than the donor's surgery and has a short healing time.
Usually the recipient leaves the hospital before the donor in the living-donor transplant. The newly placed kidney starts making urine usually in the operating room after being connected.

In brief: Walking next day
Most people in need of kidney transplantation are used to operations because of dialysis.
This type of txp is a moderate sized operation - 3 structures to connect (artery, vein + ureter). Recovery depends on how poorly conditioned the pt was to begin with (can you at least walk 1 block without stopping?) and whether the kidney starts working right away. The usual hospital stay is now 3-6 days.
