If I have a kidney stone, what are some of the best treatments?

In brief: Dietary changes

The best option is prevention.
Increase your fluid intake. Once a stone is present, still increase water intake to prevent growth of the stone. Fresh lemon juice with water daily will help prevent kidney stone formation. Avoid caffeine, chocolates, and teas (hot or cold). If there is pain, surgery with a laser or shock wave treatment will be required to break up the stone and remove the fragments.

In brief: Stones

Depends on the size and position in the kidney.
Shockwave lithotripsy may be the best option in the kidney. If in the ureter, lithotripsy or ureteroscopic basket extraction is usually done.
