In brief: Diet causes
Also, phophate crystals from dairy products intake. Also, oxalate from eggplant, strawberry and tea. Please, note the change of urine acidity makes some crystals melt and disappear. Also, some diseases cause crystals like gout, malabsorption, and oxaluria.

In brief: Depends on type
Most stones are calcium oxalate or calcium phosphorous stones.
It is hard to predict why people get these stones. However, calcium restriction is not thought to help. Other causes include urinary tract infection, high uric acid (can be due to chemotherapy) and a genetic disorder. High protein and dehydration increase risk of urinary stones.
