In brief: Control your weight

Kidney disease primarily comes from diabetes and hypertension.
If you never develop these disease or control these disease, then you will preserve your kidney function. Ultimately, if you control your weight , minimize salt intake and get regular exercise, you are less likely to develop diabetes and htn. Then you won't develop kidney disease.

In brief: Prevention

The main goal is to avoid harming kidneys with 1) avoiding toxins 2) staying hydrated 3) controlling contributing diseases 4) education about kidney function.
Diet can help to optimize weight, control diabetes, control blood pressure, prevent kidney stones and gout and should be reviewed.
