In brief: Metastatic disease

This occurs when the kidney cancer has progressed and has spread to the lungs.
Kidney cancer, like all cancers, can spread (metastasize) if left untreated. Kidney cancer typically spreads to local lymph nodes, other organs, and also the lungs.

That is why, if detected early, before it has spread, we try to excise the cancer completely, often requiring a total Nephrectomy (=excision) of the affected kidney.

In brief: Metastasis

Renal cell carcinoma often spreads or metastasizes to the lungs.
If there are few spots, they may be able to be surgically removed.
