In brief: Sun Safety
As most common skin cancers are due to sun exposure, proper sun protection measures can prevent skin cancer development: 1) hat, 2) cover up, 3) seek shade, 4) sunscreen of spf30 and above, reapply every 2 hours when in the sun, 4) routine monthly self skin checks for changing moles, 5) routine physician skin checks (yearly or every other yearly depending on the amount of prior sun exposure).

In brief: Avoid the sun
Though genetics do play a role in skin cancer, avoidance of the sun is key to prevention.
If it is already too late, there are topical chemotherapeutic drugs that can treat precancerous and superficial skin cancers.

In brief: Sunscreen!
Using sunscreen and limiting your exposure to uv radiation are the most important way.
You should never use a tanning bed and you should see your friendly dermatologist for routine skin examinations.
