In brief: Shingles
If you had chicken pox as a child, the virus is already in your body.
It remains dormant in most people but can activate if the immunity is lower e.G in hiv, cancer or even old age. These days it can be effectively treated if medical attention is sought early on. If you think you have shingles, please see a physician as soon as you can.

In brief: Chickenpox Part II
Shingles (varicella zoster) is a reactivation of the chicken pox infection you had as a child.
The virus remains dormant in the body. It can reactivate as shingles at a later date. This reactivation may be due to a compromised immune system or due to the natural changes in immune system function with aging. Children are now receive chicken pox vaccine which should prevent future shingles.
