Rubber Dams are very helpful during root canals in isolating the tooth while the dentist is doing the procedure. It keeps bacteria in the mouth from entering the tooth. They are very comfortable as you can move your tongue around and it won't get in the way of the dentist. They keep the tooth dry for root canals, fillings and bleaching.

In brief: Can be Mandatory

In certain procedures, such as root canals, the use of a dental dam is the standard of care; therefore it's mandatory.
In other cases it is highly helpful, but not mandatory. Such cases might be deep fillings, placement of inlays, onlays, or post space preparation. Often, the Dentist will use another form of isolation for the above procedures, maintaining patient comfort and attaining isolation

They are very helpful and comfortable to the patient.
They keep the tooth isolated and dry for fillings, root canals, and bleaching procedures. Keeping the tooth dry and not allowing bacteria in the mouth from entering the tooth during root canals is very important.

In brief: Standard of care

The dental dam is the standard of care.
There are very few instances when a rubber dam isn't warranted for dental treatment.
