In brief: Sedation
The most common side effect of Atarax (hydroxyzine) is sedation.
If you are doing something such as driving or working with machinery where sedation could put you at risk it would be wise to be cautious and either avoid the behavior or the atarax (hydroxyzine).

In brief: Sedation
There are antihistamines which will not make you sleepy.
Or do you take it as a tranquilizer?

In brief: Sleepy
Atarax is an anti-histamine and can make you sleepy.
Some of my patients say it 'wires' them instead of making them tired. Children especially can have this paradoxical reaction. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is just a good and cheaper with no prescription needed.
