In brief: Onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis, or toenail fungus.
Is a growth of plantlike matter within the substance of the toenail. As a toenail grows out the fungus attaches to its distal edge and move proximally or toward the body. Onychomycosis is usually caught in males much easier than in females, and many of those males have been in the armed forces previously with contact with the fungus in showers and and barracks.

Or out in the field or combat areas in which wet feet, dirty socks, constant foot trauma from hiking over rough terrain and other such indignities may increase exposure to fungus.

In brief: Exposure

The nail is separated from thevskin and fungus is introduced into the nail.
Improper manicure would be the primevsource. Inbearly stages over the counter products could still workbbutvlaterctheyvwill e marginally effective.
