Do kids with trachs (ex27-wkers) all need airway meds (corticosteroids) until the trach comes out?

In brief: No

There is no need to give steroids because a child has a trach.
The steroids are to treat the underlying problem such as lung disease, and should be weaned as the situation allows.

Steroids can actually cause more complications, i.e, intestine

In brief: Depends on the lungs

The need for steroids depends on the lungs (or whatever other reason the steroids are being used).
If an ex-preemie has bpd that requires steroids while trach'd, he'll probably still need the steroids after he is no longer trach'd. Hopefully, his lungs will grow, and he'll wean off steroids. Every child is unique, so his own lung doctor is the best judge of which meds are needed and for how long.

In brief: No

It really depends upon the clinical situation regarding the trach and their lung function.
With severity, some need it, some do not. Also a factor, is the reason for the trach.
