How can I tell if my mild lower back soreness is due to kidney stones?

In brief: Sometimes

If the pain is not related to position or activity or if there is blood in the urine, it may be related to kidney stones.
If the pain is worse with activity or better with rest, it is most likely a back issue. Sometimes, it is hard to tell which it is without testing & evaluation.
