In brief: Via blood and lymph

Like other cancers, melanomas spread (metastasize) via 2 pathways.
First, via the lymph system, where the tumor gets caught in lymph nodes. Sentinel node biopsy is helpful to determine lymph node involvement. Next, it can spread via the blood. That's how melanoma can go from your skin anywhere to the brain, lung, liver, etc. It's propensity to do this makes melanoma so dangerous.

In brief: Lymph system

The most common way for melanoma to spread throughout the body is through the lymph system, into the lymph nodes initially and then subsequently into the circulation and then distant organs.
This is the reason while sentinel node biospy is so importatn for melanoma surgical care. However this does not hold true for all melanomas, truly one of the most unpredictable human cancers.
