In brief: Not always

Most cases of hairy leukoplakia are reported in HIV patients and is related to ebv infection.
However, it has also been reported in patients without hiv. Patients with immune compromise (post-transplant) or autoimmune problems may develop hairy leukoplakia.

In brief: H. Leukoplakia

Hairy leukoplakia associated with HIV is normally a white plaque or build-up on the sides of the tongue.
If you are associated a risk catagory( gay, sexual promiscuity, medically compromised, partner history, etc.) and this condition, you may want to be tested for hiv.
