In brief: Yes, but...

Women with implants can have mammograms, but they are often less helpful because the implants obstruct some of the breast tissue we need to see.
Depending on the size of the implants and the patient's risk for breast cancer, a breast MRI might be ordered to view all the breast tissue more thoroughly.

In brief: Absolutely

Breast exam after augmentation is still as accurate as before.
A little extra care has to be taken with mammograms, however, to have the procedure performed and interpreted properly.

Be sure to alert the mammography technologist prior to your procedure so they can make the right preparations and take the correct films

In brief: Yes

Typically implants are placed behind the pectorals muscle and then regular screening with mammograms can be done.

Sometimes breast MRIs are necessary if scar tissue has developed from the implants

In brief: Absolutely!! Do it!

Absolutely, it is important to continue self breast examination and routiune screening as recommended by your primary care giver. Occasionally this may require an MRI or the use of ultrasound guided breast biopsies to assist diagnosis when an implant is present.

In brief: Absolutely

Women with implants should definitely have mammograms performed after augmentation.
They have the same risk of developing breast cancer as they would without implants, and mammograms can detect these cancers earlier than palpation, enabling the woman to get treated earlier and most likely living longer.

In brief: Yes

Following breast augmentation, women may still be screened for breast cancer through mammography, ultrasound, and mri.
When having a mammogram, you should be aware that there are some cases of implant rupture related to the compression of the breast during a mammogram.

In brief: Yes.

Breast screening is encouraged.
The radiologist may have to do a couple of "displacement views." this means they have to push your implant to one side, then take the picture. http://www.jjrothmd.com/before-after/category/breast-augmentation.

In brief: Eklund Technique

Studies have shown that mammography is safe and effective in the presence of breast implants.
Make sure your mammography technologist is aware that you have the implants. They should be familiar with and utilize a special maneuver called the eklund technique which lifts the breast tissue up and away from the implant during the mammogram.

Make sure that your mammogram facility can do these views. Most now ask their patients when they call for an appointment because extra time is required. It's also important to know that women with breast implants are no more likely to get breast cancer, and they are no more likely to have a more advanced cancer than women without implants.

In brief: Yes

In fact not only is it possible, they should get screening according the appropriate guidelines for their age and personal/family history.
Occasionally, the screening may require an extra step or two to "see" everything around the implant but any facility where mammograms are routinely performed will typically see several women a day who have implants. They will be skilled at getting a good study.

In brief: Definitely

Mammography recommendations are the same for women with implants.
Implants should be placed behind the muscle moving the breast tissue forward and avoiding trapping any breast tissue behind the implant. With implants, 2 sets of films are done - 1 with the implants in place and one with them displaced to get just the breast tissue.
