In brief: Placental test

It tests how well the baby can handle labor.
It tests how well the placenta is functioning. You are given some Pitocin (oxytocin) to cause some contractions. The baby's heart is monitored during the contractions to see if the heart tracing is good.

In brief: Checking baby

A contraction stress test is done very infrequently.
Oxytocin is given through an IV to cause contractions and then the fetal heart rate is monitored throughout. This is a way to assess the status of the baby. A nonstress test is a more common way of doing this. During a nonstresss test the baby is monitored without oxytocin administration.
