In brief: Facet Injection

A facet injection is a minimally invasive procedure that can temporarily relieve back pain caused by inflamed facet joints.
A facet injection includes both a long-lasting corticosteroid and an anesthetic numbing agent. The Medial Branch Block is mostly an anesthetic injection for diagnostic purposes to determine candidacy for radiofrequency ablation.

In brief: Clarification

There are facet blocks &there are nerve blocks.
To see if a facet joint is causing back pain, a facet block is done. If one is trying to isolate a source of nerve pain a nerve block may be done or if there is compression of the nerve in or about its exiting foramen, a transforaminal nerve block injection may be done when a disc herniation or spinal stenosis is present or both.

In brief: Diagnostic

This procedure is indicated when the source of back/neck pain is unclear. Anesthesia of facet joint nerve supply (two nerves per joint) is performed as a diagnostic test.
If your pain is gone for several hours the diagnosis of facet generated pain can be confirmed.
