In brief: Heart problems
If breast pain cannot be reproduced by pushing on the chest, and especially if it occurs/gets worse after exercise or walking up stairs, the problem may be your heart.
Tell your doctor about these symptoms. If you have breast pain with sweating, nausea, arm pain or a feeling of pressure or tightness in your chest, go to the closest er or call an ambulance.

In brief: Referred Pain
It is not uncommon to experience pain in the breast that may actually be arising from another part of the body.
A very common cause of this is costochondritis, which is inflammation in the joint space between the ribs and its cartilage. This often produces point-tenderness reproduced by palpated over the chest wall.

In brief: Gynecomastia
Cancers including breast are not typically painful.
If they were detection would be made earlier. Gynecomastia is hormonally driven breast growth. Just like female breast tenderness associated with pms male breast discomfort and pain are typically related to gynecomastia.
