In brief: Top of the uterus

Fundal height refers to the location of the top of your uterus.
This is a quick and easy way to confirm that the uterus is growing normally. We start at the top of the pubic bone and use the tape measure to locate the top of the uterus. After 20 weeks this distance in centimeters roughly equals your gestational age. Ex: 28 CM fundal height = 28 weeks gestation.

In brief: Growth measurement

The fundal height is an easy, low tech way of monitoring growth of the pregnancy and screening for abnormal growth.
The uterine fundus is the top of the uterus found by palpation of the abdomen. The distance from the top of the uterus to the top of the pubic bone is the fundal height. This measurement in CM correlates with the gestational age in weeks. Ie. 32 CM correlates with 32 weeks.

In brief: Uterine measurement

The fundal height, which usually is measured after 20 weeks of pregnancy, is the length in CM from your pubic bone to the top of your uterus.
It is a general measure of growth of your baby and can alert your healthcare provider, if it is more than 2 CM greater or lesser than your estimated gestational age in weeks, to do a more specific assessment of your baby's growth.

In brief: Baby measurement

We measure from the pubic bone just below the bladder to the top of the uterus.
After 20 weeks, you should measure a centimeter for every week. You may be up to 2 CM off however. We use the fundal height to see if the baby is growing well.
