In brief: Decrease UV exposure

Uv exposure from the sun causes melanoma.
Sun protection clothing will reduce your risk of melanoma and other skin cancers by decreasing your exposure to the harmful uv radiation.

In brief: Sun damage->melanoma

That is a little hyperbole, but sun damage is the major risk factor for melanoma.
If you are a summer runner, use sunscreen early and often, use your spf clothing and wear wide brimmed hats. If you have any lesions suspicious for melanoma get them checked early. The abcd rules of melanoma are used for screening. www.melanomafoundation.org.

In brief: Decreased exposure

Uv light damage to skin we think increases the risk of developing skin cancer.
Less exposure equals less risk.
