In brief: Yes

The very best way to prevent lung cancer is to not smoke.
Also from the time a smoker stops it can take up to 15 years for the lung cancer risk to go back down to that of a non-smoker! if you never start your risk of lung cancer will be low.

Stop smoking.
Even if you have smoked for several years, stop smoking at any time reduces your risk. Check your house for radon. There are multiple commercial radon detectors. Radon is the second biggest cause of lung cancer. If you have a family history of lung cancer at a young age, then see an oncologist at a major nci comprehensive cancer center for further questions.

In brief: Some Types

For the most part, don't smoke or hang out with smokers, and one will not get lung cancer.
There is growing evidence that some types of lung cancer can be genetically inherited. These are types of adenocarcinoma that are linked to genetic mutations in a protein called egfr. Often these lung cancers manifest in younger people who are never smokers. For more info: http://bit.Ly/ygfoko.
