In brief: Need diagnosis...

Before a cough can be treated, first the cause of the cough must be identified.
If your cough is less than 3 weeks duration, it could be acute bronchitis, an infection of the airways. If due to bacteria, antibiotics may be needed. If the cough is of longer duration, possible etiology includes bronchospasm, gerd, post-nasal drip or a combination. See your doctor to diagnose and treat your cough.

In brief: Mucinex (guaifenesin)

If you have a simple cold and are coughing up mucus, it is best to take medicines that make the mucus more watery and easier for you to cough up.
Cough suppressants will simply stop you from coughing, but leave all the mucus sitting in your chest. If the symptoms do not go away or worsen, or if you have a high fever, you may need to see your doctor for antibiotics.
