Additionally, i would add that soluble fibers in particular (those found in foods like oatmeal and grains like psyllium) have been shown to lower total cholesterol.
Good fats, especially omega 3 fatty acids like those found in salmon and walnuts, tend to raise the HDL (good) cholesterol while lowering the LDL (bad) cholesterol.
