In brief: Nerves

Acupuncture involves using special needles that are introduced in certain points on the skin that produces either stimulating or relaxing effect on the organ(s) that this point is related to.

My version: First, let me explain how this all-natural process works. 1. The thin flexible solid stainless steel needle is inserted into the skin and muscle and causes microscopic tissue injury. That injury triggers a healing cascade of repair. The injury is repaired and any local secondary injury is also repaired. 2. The stainless steel wire, once it enters the muscle, will trigger a muscular re-polarization and the muscle twitches. After the twitch, the muscle will relax. The relaxed muscle will be a little longer and less tense and tight.

In brief: Many Things Happenin

There are so many things happening during acupuncture it may never be totally understood.
The body views the needle as a foreign invader, and rushes natural pain killers, macrophages etc. to the site. Nerves perceive the insertion, sending a signal to the brain, which may change muscle tone locally. A Japanese MD, Nakatani, discovered the meridians can be mapped through electrodermal skin testing.

In brief: We really don't know

Most acupuncture points are NOT in muscles, but rather in the spaces between muscles.
The points are electrically different than the surrounding areas - they are less resistant/more electrically active. Inserting needles into acupuncture points promotes the flow of qi along acupuncture meridians. There are several functional MRI studies showing changes in the brain after body acupuncture.

In brief: A number of ways.

Serotonin, norepinephrine, sbustance p, gaba, dopamine, b- endorphin, acth, dynorphins, leucine - enkephalin & methionine-enkephalin are all chemicals which can be impacted through acupuncutre.
If removes obstructions in lymphatic and blood circulation, nerve conductivity and chi. Decreases imflammnation.

In brief: Eastern vs western

The eastern explanation for how acupunctures works is that the life energy flowing through the body which is termed qi (pronounced chee) can be influenced and balanced by stimulating specific points on the body.
Stimulate nerves that transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system at the base of the brain. The substances released by acupuncture relax whole body, regulate serotonin in brain.
