Numbness, pain, weak. Carpal tunnel usually starts with numbness and tingling in the thumb and first three fingers of the affected hand. Symptoms are worse at night, will often wake you up from sleep, and are temporarily relieved by shaking out the hands. Later on, if not treated, carpal tunnel can lead to pain, clumsiness, and frank weakness in the hand.

Hand numbness/pain. Most common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (cts) are thumb, index, and middle finger numbness/tingling. These tend to be the worst at nights. Also, advanced cts can cause grip and thumb weakness. Some patients will be awakened by the pain at night and note pain as far up the arm as the shoulder.
