In brief: Genetics

The main cause of autism is thought to be genetic with environmental injury or toxin.
Symptoms are language delay or loss, social incompetence, repetitive stylized behaviors or movements. The nimh has a great website for all things to do with ad. http://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/a-parents-guide-to-autism-spectrum-disorder/what-are-the-symptoms-of-asd.shtml.

In brief: No main cause

Autism may have multiple reasons for it's presentation.
Genetic, influence of toxins during pregnancy or outside influences. Research is still on going. Main thing - it's NOT the MMR vaccine. The physician who started this fear falsified his research and was disbarred in England. Multiple studies have shown it's not vaccine related. See your MD to start evaluation. http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/autism/detail_autism.htm
