In brief: 1-2 grams

It appears that most publications recommend a daily amount of 1-2 grams a day.
You may need more depending on age, bone mass and amount of dietary vitamin d and sunshine your get. Talk to your pcp about this. You may need more, you may not need any. My dose seem mostly accepted.

In brief: Depends

It depends on where you live (latitude and weather), how much sun you get, the color of your skin, your diet/exercise habits, etc.
Start with your doctor, check a vitamin d level in your blood, then get a plan.
