First you have to make sure there aren't any other causes of true obstruction.
This is done with a combination of x-rays or scans, physical examination, review of the medical history, and laboratory tests. After other causes have been eliminated, then the patient is treated for pseudo-obstruction, also called ogilve's syndrome.
