Bariatrics

In brief: Pain for 2-3 days

Nearly all bariatric surgery is laparoscopic, involving 4-5 small punctures.
These sites do burn for 2-3 days. Most people take morphine for the first 12 hours. Then an oral agent like hydrocodone is used for the next 5-7 days. Many surgeons also use small soaker catheters that drip local anesthetic into the sites to further decrease pain. It is good to think of pain as your body's way to heal!

In brief: Pain after surgery

Each one of the bariatric surgeries has their own unique side effects.
Make sure that you review the side effects with your surgeon. Remember that your pain level is unique to you, depends on multiple factors, and whether you had complications related to surgery or not.
