Is it normal not to be able to open your mouth as wide after a tooth extraction?

In brief: For a short time

That is not uncommon but should only be for a short time (few days to a week).
Muscle and soft tissue tenderness from the ext. Can cause difficulty when opening. If you are concerned you should see your provider for care.

In brief: Possibly, Yes.

Short term muscle soreness, if you were open a long time, is normal but should heal pretty quickly.
If the problem is with the temperomandibular joint itself, you need to see the dentist to take a closer look.

In brief: Swelling and Trismus

If it was a tough extraction, the swelling can cause the difficulty opening.
Also, if you required multiple shots of novicaine or other local anesthetic, this could also attribute to it. Warm moist heat and exercising the jaw will lessen the symptoms. If it continues, return to the dentist for a check up.
