Can you die from chronic myeloid leukemia if it is only in it's first stages?

In brief: Possible but unlikel

There have been excellent therapies for this disease with Gleevec (imatinib) and newer drugs.
The data is suggesting that for many patients their survival can be close to the normal population. The drugs make the disease behave. There are a small percentage who do not respond well. Your doctor can give you precise info on your situation and how you will know that you are responding well to treatment.

In brief: Only if it advances

By definition, if you die from CML then it is not in its first stages.
If the question is "Can you die from CML even if you diagnose it early?" then the answer is possibly, but current medications work extremely well for most people.
