Variable. The normal incubation period is listed as 16-18 days before the onset of parotid gland swelling. The range is 12-25 days. The virus can be isolated from saliva 7 days before to 9 days after the gland starts to swell. Droplet isolation is recommended for 5 days after the onset of swelling.
