What are the first signs of being suicidal?

Warning signs. Most people who are suicidal show signs, e.g., serious emotional crisis, depression, pessimism, hopelessness, social withdrawal, heavy alcohol or drug use, increased impulsive or risky behavior, talking about a strong wish to die, making a suicide plan, giving prized possessions away, impulsive purchase of a gun or obtaining poisons or medications for killing oneself, or unexpected rage or anger.
