Examination. Kyphosis is a normal curvature of the thoracic spine. I am assuming that you are referring to hyperkyphosis. This is where the upper back rounded forward in an exaggerated fashion. At some point there may develope a hump in back called a dowager hump. This may cause by osteoporosis, compression fractures, degenerative arthritis, scheuermann, s disease, etc.
