Tonsillitis is an annoying issue but usually very treatable.
Strep throat should be treated with antibiotics to prevent some scary complications like scarlet fever, rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation or abscesses of the peritonsillar space. Also, severe swelling of tonsils (and adenoids) with mono or other infections and cause airway obstruction. So get a tonsil infection checked out!
