In brief: Itchy rash

So much of the diagnosis depends on the location, duration and "itchiness" of the rash.
Eczema is universally itchy and it has a predilection for certain areas of the body--arms, legs, neck and eyelids (there are many exceptions to this rule). It also has a characteristic appearance.

In brief: Rash

Eczema typically presents as dry skin, red/irritated/rough rashes with bumps or flat patches of dry, crinkly, pink skin.
It itches a lot, and this itch is usually more noticeable at night. Babies with eczema often have this on their arms and legs (surfaces exposed to crawling) and face. Older kids may have this in their elbow and knee creases. Eczema typically spares the diaper area.

In brief: Itchiness/redness

Eczema is a chronic condition of itchy, scaly skin that waxes and wanes.
Often the first symptom of eczema is itchy skin. As the skin gets more itchy, redness develops and the skin can be weepy in appearance. Eczema is usually treated with topical therapies- the main treatments being emmolients (moisturizers).
