Internal Medicine - Hospital-based practice
In brief: Seconds
You i believe are referring to treatment of depression.
They first sedate you so that you do not feel anything and then they shock your brain to cause a brief controlled response. You will not feel anthing. The episode itself typically last less than 30 seconds. After, there may be some memory deficit, but you will not remember the event. I have seen amazing rersults coming from ect.
