Prozac (fluoxetine) One old hypothesis was that some severely depressed patients who had thoughts of self-harm & had no energy to carry on the act, when given medication that gave them extra energy fast, that they carried on the act of self-harm before they had the chance to work thru their depression. Again, this is only hypothetical, since data re. The subject are scarce & not much is written about it.
Not likely. We are always cautious of worsening depression after starting antidepressants. But is unclear whether it is due to the medication or progression of the illness, before the medication becomes therapeutic.
Not much. Important question is your reason for doing so! See a psychiatrist.
Excellent. Inexpensive also but like anything else, it's all about you and what works for you. Talk to your doctor. Sometimes we try several until we find what works best for you.
Prozac (fluoxetine) One of older antidepressants, seems to work well for most.
Maybe. Not all patients loose weight on prozac (fluoxetine).
Prozac (fluoxetine) Some. Prozac (fluoxetine) is not wt. Medicine. Most likely, as depression improves, the wt. Stabilizes some.
Yes. Here are some of the neurological and cardiovascular side effects of Prozac (fluoxetine) and other ssri drugs: anxiety, restlessness, suicide, seizures, agitation, hallucinations, hostility, hypertension, angina, heart failure, heart attack, embolism, heart block, rapid heart beat, delusions, amnesia. There are many others that can affect you physically.
The opposit is true. In fact it may help with the pain issues associated with depression.
What's an OTC pill for depression if my Prozac (fluoxetine) ran out and won't be ready until Monday?
None. There are no over the counter antidepressants. Talk with your pharmacy or doctor to figure out why such a long delay for a refill.
Exercise. An hour of moderate to strenuous exercise can be as beneficial as your antidepressant.
I am just starting Prozac (fluoxetine) and was wondering what will happen if my depression increases?
If it does. If it does, call your psychiatrist & let them know that you feel more depressed. This may be a sign that the medication is not the right one for you. If that's the case, there are other medications that you can consider.
Depression. Prozac (fluoxetine) and similar medications can take several weeks to reach full effectiveness. After and even within that time period, if your depression worsens, it will be important to contact your physician, as you may need a change in dosage or to shift to a different medication. However giving the medication time to work is an important piece of starting an antidepressant.
I would like Prozac (fluoxetine) not for depression but to lower my sexdrive. Could I lie to my dr. And get some?
Why lie? It is an off label but legitimate use for prozac (fluoxetine). However, bipolar disorder does need to be ruled out as a cause of your elevated sex drive or else Prozac (fluoxetine) could actually make it worse. Please be very straightforward with your physician and I think you will be rewarded with good results. Best wishes.
I am suffering with antenatal depression and just been prescribed prozac (fluoxetine). Should I try it out for a bit before returning to work?
See below. It is a good idea to take medications and see the response. Returning to work while you are still symptomatic might cause poor productivity and more depression due to the increased stress. If there is no response to Prozac (fluoxetine) you might need to seek the professional advice from psychiatrist before returning to work..
Pregnant & depressed. Being pregnant and depressed is not easy. Please don't assume Prozac (fluoxetine) should be your sole treatment of depression. Results are much better when combined with psychotherapy, so please make sure this is part of your treatment. Timing your return to work depends on your discussions with your psychiarist & your therapist. Prozac (fluoxetine) will take 4-6 weeks to show effectiveness.
