In brief: More con than pro

In the absence of known deficiency, multivitamins are unnecessary.
Common deficiencies are vitanin d in people who don't get much sun exposure and vitamin B12 in vegans who don't supplement. Multivitamins are now increasingly seen as unhealthy if not needed. Check with doctor before taking any and always check label to make sure you know what you are taking. Do not take above 100% of rda.

In brief: Many pros, few cons

A quality multivitamin can help you feel better if, like well over 90% of Americans, you are deficient in one or more vitamins or minerals.
Even if you don't feel better a good multivit. can boost your immune system & help prevent heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis & other chronic diseases. However, it's important to choose a good one. The only cons are from taking poor quality vits- see comment:

Unfortunately many popular vitamins have toxic additives, synthetic chemicals like l-alpha tocopherol (a synthetic isomer of Vit E that is likely harmful) and forms of minerals like magnesium oxide that are poorly absorbed. Thus, it is important to choose a good quality multivitamin. See See http://bit.ly/18XyuLe and http://bit.ly/1b36cQ0
