What're the best medications for anxiety and panic disorder?

Medications that. Raise serotonin in the brain can significantly decrease baseline anxiety, which can prevent panic from happening. Sometimes adding a long acting benzodiazepine like Clonazepam can further decrease baseline anxiety.
MANY. There are a lot of options for treating panic and anxiety. The antidepressant class of medications is often used for anxiety. I believe that benzodiazepines (ie xanax, (alprazolam) valium etc) have a place and can be used very safely if prescribed appropriately.

Not benzos. The challenge for me is always to try and have a patient panic free without having to resort to benzodiazapines. These drugs include xanax, (alprazolam) klonopin, valium and others. Because they are potentially addictive, i avoid them. My drug of choice for panic disorder is nortriptyline. I also like citalopram and buspirone.

Other than Valium, what are the best anxiety/ panic disorder medications?

Anxiety meds. That depends. If the anxiety and panic is daily, long-term medications like the ssri and snri class of medications (sorry not enough space to spell it out!) may be the best option. If the symptoms are sporadic or rare, the benzodiazepines such as xanax, (alprazolam) ativan, valium, and Klonopin may be a better choice. Other options include beta blockers, gabapentin, clonidine, and buspirone. Read more...

What is a good medication for both panic disorder and social anxiety?

No Benzos. I would avoid medications in the class called benzodiazapines, as they can become habit forming. These include medications such as klonopin, xanax (alprazolam) and ativan. They are commonly prescribed and it is very easy to get hooked. I like to try the medications Buspirone and/or nortriptyline for my patients with anxiety. Both are available at walmart for $4.00. Therapy? Have you yet tried any form of psychotherapy? SNRI's like Venlafaxine are also available which can be useful. Maybe a dose increase via your doctor for your ongoing Meds might be beneficial. Read more...
