In brief: Steps
Numb tooth, isolate with rubber dam, remove infected tooth structure/decay, use files to clean out nerve, fill with gutta percha (orange filling material), do a core buildup (foundation filling for crown to sit on), drill tooth to fit for crown, pack a piece of cord to mildly separate gun from tooth for a good impression, remove cord, take an impression, make a temporary.
Check bite.

In brief: Many
Numb you, access the pulp (nerve), clean it out, guage out the canals to remove debris and infected tissue, disinfect, obturate (fill).
Xrays taken at times as well. Then prepare tooth for crown by cutting it down, impression of it, temp placed, come back in couple weeks to have it put on, or same day prepped in some places. Ask the dentist.

In brief: Many
There is not enough space to put all of this in writing.
However, a root canal usually takes 1 hour (total 2 visits, sometimes 3) and a crown can take 3-4 visits.
